Alyson Markell features Equine Expressions, monotype prints and mixed media. The images in her work reflect her surroundings and love for the natural environment. The abstract nature of the work allows for a more spontaneous expression, blurring the lines between the fine art of painting and printing.
Susan Richman will exhibit her works entitled Environmental Memento Mori, to honor subjects whose troubling decline makes their recognition important and poignant. With each photo she explores the juxtaposition between permanence and impermanence and the clash between beauty and the precarious state of our world.
Vince Grey presents Versatile Expressions, paintings that explore a wide range of subjects and emotions in both representational and abstract styles; inviting viewers to find peace, tranquility and life-giving energy in his works.

The Juried Art Show selections include forty-two pieces from New York State artists chosen from 106 entries.
The artists worked in diverse media including: oil, watercolor, pastel, fiber, metal, stone, ceramic, and graphite.
About the Juror:
Doretta Miller, Professor Emerita, Art Department, Skidmore College, has had a professional career as an Artist and Art Educator since 1972. Originally from Chicago, her teaching career began at a suburban high school, and after completing her Doctorate in Art Education, and Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing degrees. Miller moved to Saratoga Springs to join the faculty at Skidmore College, Department of Art and Art History. Miller’s works are in permanent collections including the United States Court of International Trade, The Hyde Collection, and Albany Institute of History and Art. She was represented at First Street Gallery, New York City, for over twenty years, and has been in numerous regional and international exhibitions, and has received exhibition awards from The National Arts Club, and at the Biennale International of Contemporary Art, Florence, Italy.

Zimou Tan won Art of New York: Annual Juried Art Show in 2023 and returns for solo shows in the Regional Art Galleries of the Arkell Museum & Canajoharie Library. His show, The Lord Was There, includes paintings featuring biblical scenes beautifully rendered in vibrant colors. These intense allegorical works are a vivid look at suffering, sacrifice, and hope.
Zimou Tan is a traditional fine artist who specializes in portrait and narrative figurative painting and drawing. Tan won the Best In Show Award at the 2023 Art of New York Juried Art Show at the Arkell Museum. He was named a "Chinese Master Artist" in 2007 by the Chinese Government Art and Culture Department; he was also selected as one of the “50 Artists that Impacted China.” Tan is a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists. He is also an Art Renewal Center living master. His work has won numerous prizes across the United States and internationally, and his been featured in arts publications in the United States and France.
Mary Beth Vought worked for many years as a graphic designer, illustrator, and art director while continuing to hone her skill in watercolor and oil. Vought’s exhibition, Paintings of the Upper Hudson and Mohawk Valley Regions of New York State, exudes a warm and gentle look at the landscapes, farms, and wildlife that inhabit New York State. Vought’s watercolors and oils show her passion for painting en plein air as the wildness of the outdoors infuses each painting. Vought states, "since 2005, I've had the privilege of working in the company of fellow plein-air artists and many of the views in my work were created on excursions with these dedicated and generous individuals."

Three artists selected to exhibit in the Art of New York: Annual Juried Art Show in 2022 return for solo shows. Britt LoSacco is figurative realist artist living in New York State and works primarily in oils. Her sensitive work observes the human condition in a detailed and poignant style. Mary Nolan has a long career as an exhibiting and teaching artist, focusing primarily on creating small onsite oil paintings of local and regional landscapes, many of which are used as studies for larger studio paintings. Her show, Moods of Oneida, features landscapes, water, and weather painted with movement and atmosphere. Mary Ellen Riell has been exhibiting since 1995, participating in over 100 exhibitions throughout the Northeast. She is a current member and former co-director of the Oakroom Artists. Her pastel landscapes, watercolors, and prints are found in private and corporate collections.
The shows are on view from Friday, August 4 through Sunday October 8, 2023. Admission to the Regional Art Galleries is free. This annual show features a wide variety of artistic styles and mediums; oil, acrylic, gouache, and watercolor paintings, photography, and sculpture submitted by artists from across New York State. Juror Eden Compton selected 42 pieces by 37 artists. She operates a permanent studio and gallery in the Beekman Arts district of Saratoga Springs, NY. Her award-winning work has been included in national juried shows, including the Catherine Lorillard Society, Salmagundi Cub in NYC, and the International Pastel Society, as well as numerous regional and local shows. She is a juried member of the Degas Pastel Society, Oil Painters of America and Portrait Society of America, and an Associate with Distinction of the American Women Artists Association.

Todd Boebel - Steeples along the Mohawk and Schoharie
“What happens to an old church once its doors are closed?” Using black & white views of discreet church exteriors, Boebel traces the development of church architecture in the region through the nineteenth century while shedding light on its Protestant past and present. There are examples of churches abandoned, churches that have taken on diminished roles or have been repurposed, and others that remain open and reflect the simplicity of rural believers.
Robert Coppola - Frame of Mind
Robert Coppola’s urban upbringing is reflected in his approach to photography; “My landscapes are nostalgic. Photographed in multiple locations, the urban landscapes depict the present reimagined. The rural landscapes betray my awe of the natural beauty of open spaces where farms dot the landscape.”
Phil Scalia - The Snows of Canajoharie
Phil Scalia’s photographs celebrate the raw intensity, danger, and sparse beauty of the rural landscape in winter. “I like to go out in the worst weather, it gives an edge to the shooting. It's scary, it's addictive. A mistake can kill you. I spend as much time gear-tweaking clothing and snow tires as photo gear.”

Enjoy a visit to the Regional Art Galleries and see the work of artists Wendy Allen, Brett Scott Laumeister and Mary P. Murphy. Allen presents Finding Solace in Simplicity – art as an antidote to feeling anxious about the world by turning to gardens for a sense of peace. Laumeister’s contemporary still life oil paintings are completed in a highly detailed style he developed while living and running an art gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Murphy has exhibited widely in the Mohawk Valley region, Art Students League in NYC, and is a signature member of the Central NY Watercolor Society. Her show of oil and watercolor paintings includes Mary P. Murphy, Clare's Red Table: A Painting Series, that honors her sister’s “resilience and determination, and for me, symbolizes love and life”. Murphy & Laumeister open on Friday, August 5, with Allen starting on Tuesday, August 9. On view through October 9, 2022.

"I am honored to serve as juror for this year's annual show at the Arkell Museum. It was exciting to view new, never before seen works by artists from across the state. The challenge to edit 217 works (the great majority of which are of excellent quality and certainly eligible for inclusion) down to 46 was difficult. I hope that my selections reflect the diversity of media, aesthetic sensitivity and commitment to craftsmanship that I found among these works." – Paul Marcellino
Paul Marcellino received a BFA from Temple University and MFA from the Graduate School of Figurative Art at the New York Academy of Art in Manhattan. He has exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the US, served as juror for regional and national exhibitions, and received funding for his work from the Putnam Arts Council, Upper Catskill Community Center for the Arts, and the New York State Council for the Arts. He taught art classes and workshops throughout the Northeast and at the Pratt Institute, New York Academy, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York State Summer Institutes, and the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Montecastello in Umbria, Italy.
